Power and Associates 2009 Marine Engine Competitive Information StudySM. The study was released at the 2009 Miami International Boat Show.
The study measures overall customer satisfaction with four marine engine types including outboard DI two-strokes, outboard EFI four-strokes, sterndrive EFIs, and inboard EFIs. Customer satisfaction index scores are based on performance across seven factors such as starting ease, quietness at cruise, reliability, fuel economy, shifting smoothness, lack of exhaust fumes and acceleration.
In the Outboard DI Two-Stroke Segment, Evinrude ranked the highest with its performance in shifting, efficient fuel economy and reliability, while Honda ranked the highest in the Outboard EFI Four-Stroke Segment. According to the study, Honda's outboards performed particularly well in starting ease, shifting smoothness and reliability. Yamaha followed Honda in the rankings, while Suzuki ranked third in the segment.
For the second consecutive year, Volvo Penta was recognized as the highest in the Sterndrive EFI Segment, performing particularly well in the fuel economy and lack of exhaust fumes factors. In the Inboard EFI Four-Stroke Segment, the Pleasurecraft Engine Group (PCM) ranked the highest for a fourth consecutive year, performing particularly well in fuel economy and lack of engine fumes factors. The study also reported more than 70 percent of inboard EFI engine owners indicated that their new engine is problem-free, which is the highest percentage across all four segments examined in the study.
The 2009 Marine Engine Competitive Information Study is based on responses from 9,790 owners who registered a new boat between June 2007 and May 2008. Eleven brands of outboard, sterndrive and gas inboard marine engines were included, which was fielded between September and November 2008.
